The Dulcote Quarry proved to be a particularly challenging kilometre of the Strawberry line on its way to Shepton Mallet. The Council’s Recycling Centre occupies part of the track bed so considerable excavation along the hillside was needed to bypass these operations. In the final field, we deprive livestock of almost their only shade, so we erected a shelter with the agreement of the landowner.
Initial construction was slow as we could only build on Tuesdays when the recycling centre was closed, in case a rock rolled down the hillside onto the public below. An exceptionally wet winter in 23/24 necessitated a pause in the work. We were able to keep within budget because of the skill of our contractors – Lee and Mark of Goldings, but also because teams of volunteers under Richard Jones and Steve Turner put in days and days of time erecting fencing and planting.
