New Bridge installed in Shepton Mallet – and shortlisted for an award

On Tuesday 14 October we installed a new bridge over the B3136 in Shepton Mallet, along the former East Somerset Railway – often known as the Strawberry Line. The route will provide a link across the town to the skate park, playing fields, football club and hospital. It joins the 1km section of the West Shepton route that was opened in March 2023 to Ridge Road. The video linked below is far from perfect, but captures the tension well.

PLEASE DO NOT ATTEMPT TO USE THE BRIDGE YET – it is still a construction site. We will be carrying out further safety work and inspections and aim to open the bridge to the public by the end of October.

And we returned home, very weary, to find that our work to create the Two Viaducts and a Tunnel route has been shortlisted for a National Railway Heritage Award. All credit to the Friends of Windsor Hill Tunnel and our 2023 Workcamp for this success.
